In honour of Valentine’s Day, this year we have composed a little poem of love for 3D. Corny perhaps, even hokey, but isn’t that what Valentine’s day is all about?
This is for anybody who has experienced the wonders of 3D, and a calling card for anyone who pines for the day that they can get a little bit of 3D love themselves. We hope you enjoy our little poem, to show our love for 3D technology this Valentine’s day.
The Poem
3D, We Love You!
Wherever you are, wherever we find you,
We still sometimes find that we try to look round you,
You give our life depth, films were so shallow,
The 3D effect, into our eyes you can burrow!
In days of yore, you were so bright, so bawdy,
That the sight was (forgive us) really quite shoddy,
But now your 3D glasses take us into illusion,
Whether active or passive, the reality you deepen.
At the cinema we met, you took us afar,
Onto long distant worlds, where we met Avatar,
But we never knew that the 3D effect,
Could be so constructed, could be so perfect!
We longed to take you home, to set you up where we live,
With our 3D TVs you have us captive!
Where will you take us? Where will we go?
All these wondrous sights, who even knows?
And so, 3D glasses, you’re such an asset,
Now we can go and watch Gnomeo and Juliet,
Or play 3D games on our Playstation 3,
Without having to worry that it will be kinda blurry.
We must stop now before we get carried away,
And end up writing a lengthy essay,
But one final request, if you’ll permit me:
Share with your loved ones, this poem 3D
Explanatory Notes
This poem describes a journey that many people have probably taken with the 3D effect. The “days of yore” when the 3D effect was “so bright, so bawdy” describes the time when red-blue 3D glasses were all we had to create 3D, and they did not always work. Sometimes the edges were blurry, or it did not even create the illusion of 3D, hence it was “shoddy”. With the modern sorts of 3D glasses though, which are knows either as “active” or “passive” depending on the type being used, they work properly, and create depth properly, immersing you in the world being shown.
 We love you, 3D!
The breakthrough in modern 3D is largely put down to James Cameron’s Avatar. There had been several animated films shown with the modern 3D effect before this, but Avatar showed what could be done with live action films and was a huge success.
This is probably what has led many people into wanting to own a 3D TV, so that they can recreate this cinema experience in their home. And nobody knows how the effect will be used in the future to create films and television programmes of this quality again.
Of course Gnomeo and Juliet 3D is out at the cinema at the moment, another appropriate one for Valentine’s Day.
So hopefully you enjoyed this little poem of love to 3D, and we wish you a happy Valentine’s Day!
